Microsoft Windows Server 2016 Standard Server CALs Edition

Choose a 2, 5, 10, 20 or 50-CAL pack for named-user access to appropriately licensed Windows Server 2016 services. One supplied licence record covers the selected CAL quantity. These CALs provide access rights; they do not include the Windows Server operating system or Remote Desktop Services licensing.

Choose the correct licence layer: Your server software must be licensed separately. Remote Desktop Services requires an additional matching RDS CAL for each connecting user or device; RDS CALs are not included on this page.
  • 2–50 CAL packs
  • Named-user access
  • One licence covers the selected quantity
  • Fast email delivery
  • Not an RDS CAL

Digital fulfilment

Fast delivery with Australian installation support

What arrives by email

Your delivery email contains the supplied licence information for the selected CAL quantity, relevant Microsoft guidance and clear instructions.

Typical delivery time

Most verified orders are emailed within 1–10 minutes. Payment or fraud-review checks can occasionally extend fulfilment time.

Support included

Get help through remote assistance, live chat, email or phone. If a supplied licence issue cannot be resolved after supported checks, Software Mart will arrange a replacement or refund under its policy.

No RDS Manager activation: Base Windows Server CALs are access entitlements and are not installed through Remote Desktop Licensing Manager. That console is used for RDS CALs, which are a separate product.

Licence-model decision

Choose User CALs when people outnumber their regular devices

Hybrid employees

One licensed person can access Windows Server services from an office PC, laptop or another work device.

Mobile teams

Useful when named employees move between locations and regularly use more than one endpoint.

Identity-based management

Track licensing by named user rather than tying the access right to a single shared device.

Three licence layers

Base CALs and RDS CALs solve different requirements

  1. 1

    License the server operating system

License Windows Server Standard or Datacenter for the physical cores of the server, or use another valid edition-specific licensing model.

  2. 2

    License ordinary access

Assign a base Windows Server User or Device CAL to each user or device that requires it under Microsoft's terms.

  3. 3

    Add RDS licensing when required

For Remote Desktop Services sessions, add the matching RDS User or Device CAL. An RDS CAL does not replace the base CAL.

Buyer questions

Windows Server 2016 Standard Server CAL FAQs

Does one supplied licence cover the selected CAL quantity?

Yes. One supplied licence record covers the 2, 5, 10, 20 or 50-CAL quantity selected above.

Is a Server CAL Windows Server software?

No. It provides access rights for the licensed users. The Windows Server operating system must be licensed separately.

Does one User CAL cover several people?

No. Each User CAL is assigned to one named user. Choose Device CALs instead when many people share a smaller number of fixed devices.

Can a licensed user work from several devices?

Yes. A User CAL follows the named user rather than one endpoint, subject to Microsoft's licence terms.

Do I enter this in Remote Desktop Licensing Manager?

No. Remote Desktop Licensing Manager is for RDS CALs. This page supplies base Windows Server access CALs; RDS CALs are purchased separately.

Are CALs different for Standard and Datacenter?

Windows Server CALs are version-based access licences and are not normally edition-specific. An appropriate Windows Server CAL can provide access to Standard or Datacenter of the same or an earlier version.

How many CALs should I buy?

Count every named user who requires licensed access, then select the matching pack. Contact Software Mart if your environment mixes User CALs, Device CALs or RDS access.
