Who this edition is for—and who should choose something else
A good fit when you:
- need Office for one Windows PC;
- want Outlook as well as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote;
- prefer a one-time purchase to a recurring subscription;
- work from home, run a small business or need classic desktop apps for professional tasks; or
- can manage the licence through a Microsoft account.
Choose another option when you:
- use a Mac, Chromebook, iPad or Android device as the destination device;
- need Office on more than one computer;
- need multiple people to use Office simultaneously under one licence;
- want included cloud storage, continuous feature additions or plan-bundled AI services; or
- need centralised enterprise deployment, volume activation or organisation-wide licence management.
Licence scope
One licensed device, used by one person at a time
Microsoft’s published Office 2024 retail terms describe the software as licensed, not sold. They allow one instance on the licensed device for use by one person at a time. Separate licences are required for additional physical or virtual devices.
For stand-alone retail software, Microsoft’s terms also describe transfers to another device you own, generally no more than once every 90 days unless a hardware failure requires an earlier move. The software must be removed from the previous device. The licence terms presented during redemption and activation control your exact rights.
Important: this is not a server, pooled, concurrent-user or remote-desktop hosting licence. Organisations that need shared-device, RDS, VDI, volume-activation or central deployment rights should confirm the appropriate Microsoft licensing programme before buying.

Windows 10 warning: Microsoft lists Windows 10 as technically compatible with Office Home & Business 2024, but support for Windows 10 ended on 14 October 2025. Microsoft says Office 2024 may continue to run on Windows 10, but that combination is no longer supported. For a supported configuration through the Office 2024 lifecycle, use Windows 11.

From checkout to first document
Digital delivery, redemption and activation
- Check compatibility. Confirm the destination is one compatible Windows PC and that you can access the Microsoft account that should own the licence.
- Complete checkout. Review the live price, product name and Windows-only limitation before payment.
- Receive the digital order. After payment verification, check your inbox, spam and promotions folders for the delivery email and instructions.
- Redeem once with Microsoft. Sign in at Microsoft’s setup page with the intended account and redeem the product key. This associates the licence with that account.
- Download, install and activate. Use the same Microsoft account to install Office. Remove incompatible or conflicting Office installations if Microsoft’s installer asks you to do so.
Internet access is required for redemption, download, activation and updates. After activation, the installed apps can handle routine local work offline, while cloud files, collaboration and other connected features still require internet access.

Plan beyond installation
One-time licence does not mean endless Microsoft support
Microsoft’s Office 2024 lifecycle began on 1 October 2024 and lists retirement in October 2029. A one-time licence does not expire like a subscription, but it does not include a free upgrade to the next major Office release, and Microsoft support and security servicing are time-limited.
To remain in a Microsoft-supported configuration through that lifecycle, use Office 2024 on Windows 11 and keep Windows and Office updates current.
