SQL Server 2019 entered extended support on 28 February 2025. Microsoft lists extended support through 8 January 2030. It remains a practical choice for established compatible workloads; evaluate SQL Server 2022 and 2025 for new strategic deployments.

A balanced production platform

Serious database capability without Enterprise-level complexity

A strong fit for mid-tier applications, departmental databases, ERP, CRM, e-commerce, reporting and vendor systems certified for SQL Server 2019.

24 cores

Compute limit

Lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores per Database Engine instance.

128 GB

Buffer pool

Plus up to 32 GB for the columnstore segment cache.

524 PB

Database size

Theoretical maximum; practical capacity depends on architecture.

2030

Extended support

Microsoft lists extended support through 8 January 2030.

Feature analysis

What SQL Server 2019 Standard changes in real workloads

Performance, recovery, security and developer improvements can reduce operational friction when the workload fits Standard edition limits.

Intelligent query processing and connected data platform
Standout capability

Smarter query behaviour with less application change

Scalar UDF inlining and table-variable deferred compilation can improve eligible execution plans. Accelerated Database Recovery changes the operational experience of long rollbacks and restarts.

Intelligent Query Processing

Includes scalar UDF inlining, table-variable deferred compilation, interleaved execution and approximate count distinct.

Expert viewHigh impact for compatible workloads; Standard does not include every Enterprise IQP feature.

Accelerated recovery

Can shorten recovery after restarts and long transaction rollbacks while improving log management.

Expert viewMeaningful where rollback duration or recovery time creates business risk.

Layered data protection

TDE, encrypted backups, Always Encrypted, secure enclaves, row-level security, masking and auditing.

Expert viewStrong controls still require patching, key management and least privilege.

PolyBase integration

Query supported external data sources through T-SQL for selective data-virtualisation scenarios.

Expert viewValidate connector and scale-out requirements before solution design.

UTF-8, JSON and graph

Build multilingual applications with UTF-8 and use JSON, XML, graph, temporal and full-text capabilities.

Expert viewA practical modernisation release for established application teams.

Basic Availability Groups

Two replicas for one database per group. The secondary is not readable and cannot host backups.

Expert viewGood for focused failover; advanced topology requires a different design or edition.
Licensing decision centre

Match the model to how people access SQL Server

Start with the deployment—physical server or VM—then count processing cores or every accessing user/device.

Recommended for unlimited or external access

Per Core licensing

Licence the processing power. Separate SQL Server CALs are not required for users or devices accessing the correctly licensed server.

  • Minimum four core licences per physical processor
  • Core licences commonly sold in two-core packs
  • Often simpler for public or hard-to-count access
  • Physical-server and VM calculations differ
For small, countable populations

Server + CAL licensing

Licence each server, then assign the appropriate CAL to every accessing user or device, including indirect access.

  • Best when users/devices are known and controlled
  • Every accessing user or device generally needs a CAL
  • Multiplexing does not reduce CAL requirements
  • Version and access rights must align
Important terminology: “Unlimited CALs” means unlimited user/device access under Per Core licensing. Separate SQL Server CALs are not required for that model.
Technical comparison

SQL Server Standard across five generations

Use application certification, scale, resilience and support runway—not release year alone—to select the correct version.

Version Generation Major advances Support posture Best current fit
SQL Server 2016 Foundation Query Store, Always Encrypted, RLS, temporal tables Extended support ended 14 Jul 2026 Legacy version-bound estates
SQL Server 2017 Cross-platform Linux, graph, adaptive query processing, Python Extended support Earlier mixed-platform deployments
SQL Server 2019 · Selected Intelligent IQP, ADR, UTF-8, enhanced PolyBase, secure enclaves Extended support to 8 Jan 2030 Stable compatible mid-tier workloads
SQL Server 2022 Hybrid Query Store default, parameter-sensitive plans, Azure MI link, ledger Mainstream support Modern hybrid deployments
SQL Server 2025 AI-ready Vector capabilities, enhanced JSON, modern performance and security Mainstream to 2031; extended to 2036 New strategic deployments
Processorx64, 1.4 GHz minimum

2.0 GHz or faster recommended.

Memory1 GB minimum

At least 4 GB; increase with database size.

Storage6 GB available minimum

Plan resilient data, log and backup storage.

WindowsWindows Server 2016+

2019, 2022 and 2025 supported.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers before you commit

Is SQL Server 2019 Standard a perpetual licence?

It is sold as a standalone, perpetual licence for the licensed version and scope. Confirm the exact agreement, licence evidence, transfer rights and Software Assurance status supplied with the order.

What does “Core and Unlimited CALs” mean?

Under Per Core licensing, separate SQL Server CALs are not required. That permits any number of properly authorised users or devices to access the licensed server.

How many core licences do I need?

For physical servers, count all physical cores in each processor, subject to a minimum of four core licences per physical processor. Virtual-machine calculations differ.

When is Server + CAL a better fit?

It can be economical when the server count and every user/device are small, known and controlled. Per Core is often simpler for external or public access.

Does Standard edition include TDE?

Yes. Microsoft lists TDE, encrypted backups, Always Encrypted with secure enclaves, row-level security, masking and auditing for SQL Server 2019 Standard.

What high-availability capability is included?

Basic Availability Groups support one primary and one secondary for a single database per group. The secondary is not readable and cannot be used for backups.

Can SQL Server 2019 Standard run on Linux?

Yes, on supported Linux distributions. Validate current platform support and feature parity for the target deployment.

Is SQL Server 2019 still supported?

Mainstream support ended 28 February 2025. Microsoft lists extended support through 8 January 2030, focusing on security updates.

How is the order delivered?

Electronic fulfilment follows payment and order verification. Order documentation and download guidance are sent digitally.

Is remote installation support included?

Software Mart Australia states that free remote support is included for download, installation and activation. Migration and ongoing administration should be scoped separately.
