Core licensing removes CAL counting—not core counting.
Under the per-core model, you do not buy a CAL for every user or device. Access can scale without a separate SQL Server CAL inventory, provided the deployed physical or virtual cores are fully and correctly licensed.

Is SQL Server 2025 Enterprise a perpetual licence?
The product page should state the exact licence channel and rights supplied. A perpetual licence grants rights to use the licensed version indefinitely; it does not automatically include future versions, Software Assurance or unlimited virtualization.
Does core licensing require SQL Server CALs?
No. Under the per-core model, user or device CALs are not required. “Unlimited users” describes the access effect of correctly licensed cores; it is not an unlimited-CAL bundle.
How many core licences do I need?
It depends on whether you licence a physical server or individual virtual operating-system environments. Inventory the relevant physical or virtual cores and apply Microsoft’s current minimums and assignment rules.
Can I buy a 2-core pack and run a 16-core server?
Not by itself. Two-core packs are the purchasing unit; the total assigned licences must cover the required core count for the selected physical or virtual licensing method.
What is the Enterprise advantage over Standard?
Enterprise removes major Standard compute and memory ceilings and adds full availability groups, online restore and maintenance, Enterprise scalability optimisations, advanced in-database analytics and enterprise replication features.
Does Enterprise make every AI feature production-ready?
No. SQL Server 2025 includes GA AI foundations, but DiskANN vector indexes, local ONNX support and selected related features require PREVIEW_FEATURES. Microsoft documentation is the release-status authority.
Can SQL Server 2025 store vectors and relational data together?
Yes. The vector data type stores embeddings in the SQL Database Engine while applications continue to use relational, JSON and other supported data in the same governed platform.
Is GitHub Copilot included with the SQL Server licence?
SSMS can integrate with GitHub Copilot, but Copilot access and any required subscription or service entitlement are separate from the SQL Server licence.

What hardware architecture is supported?
SQL Server 2025 installation is supported on Intel and AMD x86-64 processors. Windows Arm64 is not supported.
Can I upgrade from SQL Server 2019 or 2022?
Yes. Microsoft lists supported paths from SQL Server 2014 SP3, 2016 SP3, 2017, 2019 and 2022, subject to edition and component rules. Side-by-side migration can be preferable when rollback or redesign matters.
What changed for DQS and MDS?
Data Quality Services and Master Data Services are discontinued in SQL Server 2025. Remove or replace dependencies before upgrade; DQS installation can block an upgrade.
Does the purchase include Windows Server?
No. SQL Server and Windows Server are separately licensed products. Windows Server CAL requirements are also separate from SQL Server licensing.
Does it include SQL Server Management Studio?
