    Count physical processors and cores

    Use the host manufacturer's specifications or firmware tools. Count physical cores, not logical processors or Hyper-Threading threads.

    Apply Microsoft's minimums

    License at least eight physical cores per processor and at least sixteen physical cores per server, even when the hardware contains fewer.

    Cover every physical core

    Select enough core licences for the host. Once fully licensed with Datacenter, the host receives unlimited Windows Server OSE rights under the applicable terms.

Windows Server 2016 Datacenter can be installed as Server Core or with Desktop Experience. Microsoft states that changing between these options later requires a clean installation. Confirm management, application and hardware compatibility before deployment.

Confirm the business case for an aging platform

Microsoft's lifecycle page places Windows Server 2016 in extended support through January 2027. Datacenter may still suit a legacy application or version-matched cluster, but a new long-term platform should also be compared with Windows Server 2022 or 2025.

What does unlimited virtualisation mean?

When all physical cores in the host are licensed with Datacenter, Microsoft grants rights to run unlimited Windows Server OSEs on that licensed host, subject to the applicable Product Terms.

Does a 16 Core licence cover every host?

No. It meets the per-server minimum, but every physical core must be licensed. Hosts with more than 16 cores need additional core licences.

Are Windows Server CALs included?

Not on this core-licence page. Users or devices accessing Datacenter normally require separate Windows Server CALs.

Does Datacenter include RDS CALs?

No. Remote Desktop Services normally requires the appropriate base Windows Server CAL plus an additional RDS CAL for each user or device.

Can I install Desktop Experience?

Yes, if selected during installation. Microsoft requires a clean installation to change between Desktop Experience and Server Core later.

When does Windows Server 2016 support end?

Microsoft extended support ends in January 2027. Review the official lifecycle page and your workload's vendor support before buying.
