Count the hardware before buying

    Count physical processors and cores

    Use the server manufacturer's specifications or firmware tools. Logical processors and Hyper-Threading threads are not physical cores.

    Apply Microsoft's minimums

    License at least eight physical cores per processor and at least sixteen physical cores per server, even if the hardware contains fewer.

    Cover every physical core

    Select enough core licences for the entire server. To run more than two Windows Server OSEs, fully license the server again for each additional pair or compare Datacenter.

Installation planning

Choose Server Core or Desktop Experience during setup

Windows Server 2016 Standard can be installed as Server Core or with Desktop Experience. Microsoft states that switching between these installation options later requires a clean installation, so confirm application and administration requirements first.

Plan beyond purchase

A perpetual licence is not permanent support

Microsoft's lifecycle page places Windows Server 2016 in extended support through January 2027. Continued use after that date does not mean Microsoft will continue ordinary security updates or product support. Consider Windows Server 2022 or 2025 for a new long-term deployment.

Windows Server 2016 Standard FAQs

Does a 16 Core licence cover every server?

No. It meets Microsoft's minimum for one server, but a server with more than 16 physical cores requires enough licences to cover every physical core.

How many virtual machines can Standard run?

Standard grants rights for up to two Windows Server OSEs when all physical cores are licensed. Each additional pair requires licensing all physical cores again.

Are Windows Server User CALs included?

Not on this core-licence page. Windows Server CALs are normally required separately for users or devices accessing Standard.

Are RDS CALs included?

No. Remote Desktop Services access normally requires both the appropriate base Windows Server CAL and an additional RDS CAL.

Can I change from Server Core to Desktop Experience later?

Not as an in-place conversion. Microsoft requires a clean installation to change between these installation options.

When does Windows Server 2016 support end?

Microsoft extended support ends in January 2027. Check the official lifecycle page before committing to a new deployment.
