Is SQL Server 2022 Standard a perpetual licence?
The licensed version can continue to be used without a recurring SQL Server subscription. Support, Software Assurance, cloud services and future-version rights are separate unless included.
Does per-core licensing include unlimited CALs?
No SQL Server CALs are required for a correctly licensed per-core deployment. That is not a bundle of CALs, and other products’ CALs can still apply.
Why is it sold in two-core increments?
Microsoft sells per-core licences in two-core packs. The pack size does not remove physical-processor or virtual-OSE minimums.
How many VM cores must I licence?
Count allocated virtual cores and apply Microsoft’s minimums, commonly at least four core licences per virtual OSE.
What are Standard’s scale limits?
The Database Engine can use the lesser of four sockets or 24 cores and up to 128 GB of buffer-pool memory per instance.
Does Standard include TDE?
Yes. TDE, encrypted backups, Always Encrypted, ledger, audit, row-level security and masking are listed for Standard.
What availability options are included?
Two-node failover cluster instances and Basic Availability Groups. Basic AG supports two replicas for one database.
Is Azure required?
No. Azure-connected capabilities are optional and may require separate services, configuration or charges.
Can I upgrade from SQL Server 2019?
Yes, Microsoft lists 2019 as a supported upgrade source. Assess, back up and rehearse first.
Will all new query features switch on immediately?
No. Upgraded databases retain prior Query Store settings, and many IQP behaviours depend on compatibility level 160.
